Charleston Clemente Course Graduates Fourteen

It Takes Courage to Complete Clemente

Tuesday, a special group of people graduated from a different and special academic course of study.

Fourteen students received certificates of completion of the Clemente Course at Trident Technical College. They heard a highly unusual “commencment address.”

Donald Heyward, speaking for his fellow students, told a story of how he was one of 13 children whose mother worked 60 years, seven days a week in a cinderblock “beer joint.”

Growing up “was no walk in the park,” he said, claiming his only academic honor before now was winning a spelling bee in the third grade. He gave an impassioned speech, giving credit to his God, his teachers and his fellow classmates.
